How to install Eclipse 3.7 on Ubuntu 11.04

The Eclipse packages in Ubuntu are are very out of date. The latest version in the Ubuntu repos is 3.5.2 where as the latest version of Eclipse is 3.7. I’m posting this because Ubuntu 11.04 uses the new Unity desktop which uses overlay-scrollbars (scrolls bars that are hidden until you hover over them). For some reason Eclipse 5.3.2 doesn’t like to play nice with the overlay scrollbars, and I’d rather use the newest version anyways. With Eclipse, you can just download the tar.gz file from eclipse.org and run it no problem, but I like set things up in a cleaner fashion, so here’s how I did it.

1) Download Eclipse. I got eclipse-SDK-3.7-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

2) Extract it

tar xzf eclipse-SDK-3.7-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

Or just be lazy and Right Click > Extract Here

3) Move to /opt/ folder

mv eclipse /opt/
sudo chown -R root:root eclipse
sudo chmod -R +r eclipse

4) Create an eclipse executable in your path

sudo touch /usr/bin/eclipse
sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/eclipse
sudo nano /usr/bin/eclipse

copy this into nano

#!/bin/sh
#export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME="/usr/lib/mozilla/"
export ECLIPSE_HOME="/opt/eclipse"

$ECLIPSE_HOME/eclipse $*

save the file (^O = Ctrl+o) and exit nano (^X = Ctrl+x)

5) Create a gnome menu item

sudo nano /usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop

copy this into nano

Overlay scrollbars were blacklisted because a workaround for a number of other bugs was causing them to glitch in Eclipse. These bugs have since been resolved (as far as I can tell).https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/769277Although it would seem only on the 32-bit arch ; I've never noticed them being blacklisted on 64-bit.Try editing /usr/bin/eclipse and removing the GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS variable, and further addingexport LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=1Precise lists the newer Eclipse 3.7.1 release and includes removal of the GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS variable, so hopefully they have also removed it from the blacklist.

Heres a cool trick to get your fps to show up in HoN.
First bring up the console using ctrl+f8, then type in host_drawfps 1.
This will show your current frames per second in the top right of your screen.
If you want it to show your Ping type host_drawfps 2.

To cancel these simply type host_drawfps 0.

Não altere o master branch diretamente, ele deve representar a repositório svn, sempre trabalhe nos branches. Você manda seu trabalho pro master apenas na hora de subir as alterações pro svn.

Com as alterações feitas e commitadas no seu branch, volte para o master e faça o merge:

git checkout master
git merge --squash minhas_paradas

Faça o commit pro git:

git commit -a -m "Funcionalidade tal implementada."

E agora pro svn:

git svn dcommit

E é isso. Pra manter o seu master branch atualizado em relação ao repositório svn use o rebase do git-svn:

git checkout master
git svn rebase

First start off by installing Apache:

Then create a directory to store repositories in:

and create a test repository:

So that Apache can read and write the repository its user (www-data) needs to be given ownership of it:

To be able to authenticate users who access the repository a password file is needed:

sudo htpasswd -c /etc/subversion/passwd paul

Enter a password for the user paul. For additional users repeat the command without the -c option to make sure the existing file is appended to rather than replaced.
Then edit the Apache config file:

sudo gedit /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

Add the following to the end of the file:

The future of Adobe Flash is in the hands of Google.

Apple’s reluctance to support Flash on the iPhone and the iPad is putting tremendous pressure on the future of Adobe’s ubiquitous platform, present in 98% of browsers worldwide.

The Adobe Flash Player is the engine behind 99% of Video in the web. Adobe Flash Player 10.1, soon to be released, was supposed to take Flash Player dominance together with online video to mobile handsets. But Google and Apple insistence in an Open Web with HTML5 native video (among other capabilities) that make Flash irrelevant can ruin Adobe’s plans. Apple bet of non supporting Flash even on the iPad shows they are pretty determined to kill Flash.

Abobe is going from being the ‘good guy’ that enabled video on the Web, to the ‘bad guy’ that imposes proprietary technology and that crashes browsers too often. Is Flash doomed to die then? It is up to Google.

Apple and Google close romance is turning to an end as both turn to competitors rather than friends in smartphones, office applications, browsers, OS, and soon in tablets and ebooks.

With Chrome OS now targeting the trendy tablet feast too, the support of Flash Player on Chrome OS and Android can give an edge over Apple’s rivals. Having all video on the web on Google powered smarphones and tablets, that would be a huge advantage to Google.

But Google could also well decide to stick to its principles and go full speed on the HTML5 open web vision, shared with Apple. If Google moves all YouTube content to HTML5, who on Earth is not going to install an HTML5 browser? Even the stubborn IE6 laggards would finally wake up and change. How long would it take for other web video properties to move to HTML5 and drop Flash?

Depois de ter feito o update tudo parecia funcionar bem...
1º obstáculo, corrector para português. Ainda não está disponível para esta versão
2º obstáculo, comecei a brincar com páginas e imagens, para meu espanto também tiraram o suporte para ICC V4

Estas duas razões, juntamente com extensões que ainda não funcionam na nova versão, levaram-me a desinstalar Firefox 3.5 e a reinstalar o Firefox 3.0.13
Adoro o Firefox, mas não está a ficar um pouco lento o seu desenvolvimento face aos rivais?
A meu ver um lançamento precipitado, uma tentativa de mostrar novas funcionalidades. Até aqui tudo bem, mas nenhum utilizador gosta de ser surpreendido com a falta de algo já adquirido.

Suporte para gestão de cores (ICC V4) e cotação de CSS (ACID3 test):

Opera 9.64	Não - 85%
Google Chrome 4.0.201.1	Não - 100% (*)
Safari 4.0.3	Sim - 100%
Firefox 3.0.13	Sim - 72%

(*) - LinkTest Failed

Pelas minhas próprias observações, concluo que devo usar o Safari 4.0.3, mas a falta de certas extensões aumenta muito o número de passos para determinadas tarefas.

Reflexão final:
Usar o Safari 4.0.3 para desenvolvimento de páginas.
Usar o preferido para navegação normal (no meu caso, Firefox 3.0.13).
